The Dialogical Model shortened

The Dialogical Model1 is an operative model that grounds, on a theoretical-epistemological point of view, on the Narrativistic Paradigm (Turchi 2004), assuming Reality as a configuration generated by speakers' discursive productions daily produced (Wittengstein L.“Philosophische Untersuchungen“, 1967). It is defined dialogical because the Reality is processually generated through the voices of speakers. So, established fact are turned from (free by the observer), favoring a Reality processually constructed, or discursively intended. In this way, on an intervention level, all discursive configurations may be changed because continuously produced/transformed: this Model is applicable in all contexts (for example the organizational, familiar, sport hospital contexts) because voices (speakers) are in all contexts and configure discursively that specific Reality.

To respect the methodological rigor, or maintaining the adherence between instruments and objects of the researches2, the principal instruments is the analysis of the texts. As you will see in several papers pertaining to the Dialogical Model Approach, the text is the object of the research in all different field of investigation/intervention, permitting to analyze how the Reality is constructed (discursively considered) and consenting - in this sense - to intervene.

Once obtained texts, interventions (in psychotherapy, organization or social policies etc.. fields) aim to insert new discourses into the Reality considered, this to interfere with the coherence3 that generates and maintains the actual discursive configurations and to generate other realities thanks to new discourses inserted.

The Operator of the Dialogical Model - intervening - offers discursive productions permitting to other voices to produce new discourses, so configures a new Reality: it starts from texts, or what generate a defined construction of Reality, and moves constructing a new one, by new discourses.

If between conflicting persons, for example wife and husband, the discursive productions severally define their own positions and maintain in this way their own coherence, the intervention of the Dialogical Model Operator4 aims to generate a third Reality different by that of the parties: starting from the texts produced by the parties, it aims to promote a process where the couple change discourses , generating something different and shared.

An intervention in organizational field is an another example of the use of this model. If in an organization employees work using personal theories aiming to conform their own internal coherence (i.e. “today I get along with you, tomorrow not”), the intervention of the Operator aims to construct a new common Reality , a 'team reality', where each role has its specific aim - connected with the general and common ones - and position in the structure, promoting in this way a Reality where each voice concurs to generate a shared team Reality and to pursue a common/general aim.

By these examples it is clear how the Operator pick up texts produced by all actors of a context / Reality (both in a conflict, in an organization, about a mental illness or drug addiction) and , by these, moves a process in which all voices concur to generate a different Reality by the actual ones. More, picking up texts permits to Operators to anticipate those aspects that can appear In the future in that context and so to manage them coherently with the aim of the intervention.

Thematic areas discussed in Cambridge, Fifth International Conference on the Dialogical Self, using Dialogical Model are:

health psychology

sport psychology

drug addiction psychology

organizational psychology

mediation

Concluding, the Dialogical Model Operator can intervene in all context and field, so the expert of a specific ambit disappear, because using the same operative model an unique role, professional figure, is able to intervene everywhere: the content of the intervention changes, the methodology remains the same.

1 A model is definable as the operative reference that grounds on a defined theoretical conception and is characterized by operative praxis (or a collection of concrete actions)

2 The objects of the researches are the discursive configurations

3 Coherence: Discourses property that orders and organizes elements, to maintain steady the congruence and the intrinsic integrity within that elements (Turchi 2000)
